Are There Services That Help With the Cost of a Funeral?

A funeral is stressful enough without having to worry about how to pay for it. In North America, the average cost of a funeral averages anywhere from $7,000 to $10,000. These costs include the price of the casket, burial fees, and fees paid to funeral homes, among other expenses. However, there are services available that can help a family manage funeral expenses.

1.) One money-saving option for a family tight on funds is to opt for a “graveside service only” funeral. Instead of having a church, funeral home and graveside service, there will only be one service held at the burial site. Cremation is another option that will eliminate much of the costs associated with a full-blown funeral. Speak with the funeral home about these services.
2.) If the family meets strict (low) income requirements, the county the family lives in might assist with burial costs. You will need to call your county treasurer to see if you qualify.
3.) If the deceased was an elderly person collecting Social Security benefits, the surviving family members may be eligible for a $225 payment from the Social Security Administration.
4.) Former veterans might qualify for burial assistance from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
5.) People can prepay for their funerals. Some funeral homes offer packages with discounted fees if the burial costs are paid in full prior to death.
6.) Some insurance plans provide funeral assistance coverage. Depending on the plan, the amounts paid out can be incredibly helpful.

By their very nature, funerals occur during very upsetting, stressful times. Easing some of the financial burden associated with them can be a relief for those that are getting through the grieving process.

Select a funeral services company that is reputable and well-known in the area and ask questions and tell them your concerns up front.  It will help you during this difficult time.
