Types of Veneers

You just looked through some pictures from your last birthday bash, and one thing stood out more than any other: your yellow-looking teeth. Stained, worn-looking teeth can age a face dramatically. A cosmetic dentist is capable of turning back the hands of time for your smile, so to speak. You could just touch up your pictures, or you could touch up your teeth with cosmetic dentistry.

The look of your smile might make you want to stock up on teeth whitening toothpaste, but toothpaste won’t dramatically change your teeth even if you want to. Veneers, on the other hand, can give your mouth a whole new look. A cosmetic dentist can explain the different types of veneers in greater depth, but let’s review them so you’ll be prepared when you visit your dentist to talk about veneers.

1) Composite resin dental veneers are made of a mixture of glass, silica and quartz. A putty-like mixture is applied to the teeth, hardened with ultraviolet light and then filed down to an attractive shape. This kind of cosmetic dentistry is also known as dental bonding.

2) Porcelain dental veneers are actually thin sheets of porcelain that are bonded directly to the teeth. They are shaped before the cosmetic dentist puts them on. They can make your teeth look bulky, so your real teeth are first filed down to make room for them.

3) Lumineers are also made of porcelain, but your teeth aren’t filed down before these are put on. This can make also your teeth look a little bulky, but you might prefer them if you don’t want to change your original teeth.

So, what do you think? Maybe it’s time to take some years off of your smile by treating yourself to some basic cosmetic dentistry.
