Chiropractic Care and Your Immune System

A chiropractor works with chiropractic patients to manage their health by focusing on the spinal column. Spinal decompression can help reduce neck pain, back pain, pinched nerve pain, and other bodily pain issues. X-rays may be taken to show the doctor where the patient’s issues are along the spine and to make sure there are no major problems like breaks or fractures.

Chiropractic services may alleviate some symptoms that patients have. For example, after going to a chiropractor, some patients have seen reductions in allergy symptoms, severe colds, respiratory problems, and other immune system-influenced issues. Spinal manipulation has been shown to reduce the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. The manipulation also allows the immunoregulatory cytokines to be increased in the bloodstream.

Some studies have suggested that manipulating the upper spine can result in the increase of T-cells in the body. According to a 2009 study by the Hungarian National Institute for Rheumatology and Physiotherapy, manipulation of the C4 and C5 disks can result in a lower amount of headaches, neck pain, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-a). The use of treatment through chiropractic services has been shown to reduce or eliminate the need for surgery in some cases. Research has also shown that manipulation of the spine can increase the synthesis of immunoglobulin G and immunoglobulin M for at least a short amount of time after the procedure.

A doctor of chiropractic services, known as a DC, primarily works to correct spinal abnormalities. These abnormalities, called subluxations, result in an interference of the nervous system. By taking care of the nervous system, it is possible to increase the benefits to the immune system.

Research and literature shows that the brain and immune system work together to fight off infections and to keep the body stabilized. If the spinal alignment is hindering the ability of these interactions, it is possible to weaken the immune system’s response to things like bacteria and viruses. In a study by Patricia Bennan, PhD and her team, manipulation of the spine was found to increase the response of white blood cells. This adjustment was found to produce a respiratory burst that is necessary for the body to fight off viruses and bacteria.

Chiropractic procedures completed by the chiropractor may increase the body’s ability to protect itself against diseases and illnesses by allowing the body to communicate more effectively.
