It seems that every time a medical journal is published, it’s extolling the virtues and benefits of red wine consumption. Once on the “foods to avoid” list alongside T-bone steak and pate de foie grois, red wine has become the poster child for the “indulgent food is good food” movement. 2.) Red wine has an abundance of antioxidants called flavonoids. Flavonoids have been shown to diminish the risk of heart disease by greatly reducing the production of LDL, or bad cholesterol. Cabernet Sauvignon has been determined to have the highest concentration of flavonoids, followed by Petit Noir and Petit Syrah.
3.) Red wine contains melatonin, an ingredient that naturally regulates the body’s sleep clock mechanism. This is good news for people who suffer from insomnia but are concerned about taking prescription medications.
General consensus is that one glass of red wine a day can provide all of the above benefits and more. However, regular consumption of more than three glasses per day can result in a buildup of triglycerides (fat in the bloodstream), so moderate consumption is suggested.
